Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Brazos County public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Regional Transportation Planning
TxDOT staff will brief the RMA board on the Big 6 project, Bush/Wellborn, I-14, Loop 214, and Highway 36A. These corridor projects shape commute times and growth across the Bryan-College Station area.
Capital Improvement Requests
The interchange project is in line for an extra $2 million in federal money and $700,000 in local TxDOT funding, but its letting year slips from 2027 to 2028 while railroad concerns are worked out. The MPO must formally amend its plan to keep the federal dollars flowing.
CHIRP hospital reimbursement transfer
Up to $11 million from the county's hospital fund would go to the state to boost hospital reimbursement rates for participating hospitals.
District Attorney Staffing and Compensation
Both prosecutor offices want the county to keep paying salaries under a state grant that hasn't been awarded yet — the county would be on the hook for up to $275,000 if the grant doesn't arrive by September 30, 2027.
Local Provider Participation Fund (LPPF) Mandatory Payments
The county is rewriting how its hospital payment fund charges hospitals — separating inpatient and outpatient revenue — and setting the FY 2027 rate. This underpins federal reimbursement dollars that flow back to local hospitals.
Subdivision Plats and Road Setback Variances
Final plats for Baker's Table Subdivision and Prairie Ridge Estates Phase 2, plus certification of the completed Pleasant Valley RV Park, advance private development in Precincts 2 and 4.
Election Security
Residents questioned the county's spending on voter roll management software, citing ongoing concerns about database accuracy, deceased voters on rolls, and coordination with the state's TEAM software system. County IT staff addressed security and patching schedules during the contract vote.
Personnel and Staffing Requests
The court reviewed and approved personnel adjustments and interim compensation guidelines designed to align departmental salaries with benchmarks established in a recent county pay study.
2026 Property Tax Levy and Fiscal Year Budgeting
The court will formally adopt the 2026 property tax levy and review budget amendments and actual spending reports. These fiscal actions determine tax collection rates and allocate public funds for county services.
Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone
Southlake is setting up a special tax zone for the Shivers Farm development to help pay for local roads and utilities. Basically, future tax dollars from the new project will get plowed right back into building the neighborhood's infrastructure.
